A grooming salon in St. Paul, Minnesota, has been named Grooming Salon of the Year, presented by Pet Product News International. Bubbles & Ecouture perform services on approximately nine clients per day and use both quality products and lush services in their salon.
Owners of the award-winning grooming salon, Gladys Tay and Frank Foo, do not consider the business a luxury salon. “We use organic and natural products for health reasons,” Tay said. “We want to avoid all the chemicals and unnatural ingredients in many of the shampoos and conditioners.”
One of the key elements of the salon is its no-kenneling policy. “Dogs when they’re kenneled often end up shaking because they’re scared or stressed,” Tay said. “Here they get to run around and play. They’re very comfortable here.”
Co-owner Tay reported that customers enjoy the no-kenneling feature, which was undoubtedly a consideration of Pet Product News International in bestowing the award to them. Boasting no specials or promotions, the duo does not spend money on advertising. Their new customers come to the salon via word of mouth and the local animal hospital.
“We got really good feedback from our customers when we weren’t kenneling their dogs,” Tay said. “They would tell us, ‘We don’t know what you do here, but our dogs always seem really happy when they came back from the salon.’ Eventually we realized it was because we weren’t kenneling the dogs, and we’ve done it ever since.”
Utilizing 300 square feet of retail space, the salon offers organic and natural food and treats, toys, accessories, and grooming supplies. The retail space, according to Tay, fosters and enhances customer relations.
Having opened three years ago, Bubbles & Ecouture has been named “Best Pet Groomer for 2010” in Best of the Cities by Minnesota Monthly. Tay co-owns the business with her husband Frank Foo, whose B.S. degree in computer networking has been helpful in maintaining their web presence.
