TAMPA, Fla. (October 16, 2014) – Halo, Purely for Pets, the natural pet food company co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres, has released “Dog’s Best Friend,” the second film in their #RescueFilm series created by Peter McEvilley to celebrate rescue pets and promote pet adoption nationwide.
The first film in the series, “Le Sauvetage” (The Rescue), was met with great acclaim, opening the Sonoma Film Festival in April 2014 and appearing at Court Metrage, Festival de Cannes in France in May 2014.
Like “Le Sauvetage,” the latest film, “Dog’s Best Friend,” was written and directed by McEvilley, an award-winning filmmaker and composer whose credits include The House Bunny, Last Vegas and Alias, and stars the Olate Dogs, winners of America’s Got Talent. Steve Marton, Halo’s CEO, is the film’s executive producer.
In this beatnik-themed rescue tale filmed in San Francisco and Sonoma, Calif., Odysseus Dog rescues his human, Alan (played by Nicholas Olate), but they get separated while out on the road. The film follows the dog’s Homeric journey across the country to get back home to Alan.
“This film is dedicated to all animal shelters and the people who work so tirelessly helping animals find loving homes so that others may share in that special and indescribable bond that occurs between people and their pets,” says McEvilley.
“The importance of our message especially hit home for me during the filming,” shares Bella Olate, the dog who plays Odysseus. “I got so deep into the role that I had to remind myself I was acting and no longer homeless,” she adds. “It made me realize again how critical this rescue work is to pets and humans and how we must continue to spread the word about the importance of adoption.” (Note: this is a “ruff” translation).
In celebration of the “Dog’s Best Friend” release, Halo is proud to announce that Freekibble.com and Halo are now feeding all of the pets at Pets Lifeline, a rescue in Sonoma, Calif., near where the film was shot. Pets Lifeline joins San Francisco Animal Care and Control as Halo’s northern California partner shelters.
Halo made its first donation to Pets Lifeline when “Le Sauvetage” opened the Sonoma Film Festival in April 2014. In addition to showing the film, the Olate Dogs performed to Sonoma’s pet loving crowd, spreading their rescue message. And, as a surprise happy ending to the weekend, the Olate family visited Pets Lifeline and happened to meet a dog who was a perfect addition to their family! Max is happy and thriving as part of the Olate Dogs.
In 2012, the Olate Dogs shot to stardom when they won the America’s Got Talent grand prize. These sweet, funny, talented dogs and their entertaining owners and handlers captured hearts across America.
Many of the Olate Dogs are rescue dogs and have teamed up with Halo for their 2014-15 Rescue Tour, which includes appearances and special projects like “Le Sauvetage,” “Dog’s Best Friend,” and two more films planned for release in the coming months.
Halo has a track record of promoting rescue and adoption through film. The company sponsors all four episodes of Shelter Me, a PBS special dedicated to showcasing shelter dogs and the incredible lives they lead. Halo also sponsored the Humane Society of the United States’ video campaign, “Meet My Shelter Pet,” a series of videos featuring celebrities and their adopted pets.
