UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (May 13, 2015) Dog sports are on the rise and the 2015 Capitol Pet Expo is showing their love for this trend by giving pet-lovers the opportunity to see and participate in lure coursing at the 2015 Capitol Pet Expo on Saturday, May 16 at the Show Place Arena from 10am until 6pm.

Lure coursing, also known as lure chasing, is a fast-paced, fun chase sport. Dogs run after a “bunny” lure (usually a white plastic bag) that is attached to a line that is controlled by a machine and a lure operator. The machine runs the line at the speed determined by the lure operator (and the dogs) and the dogs chase the lure.

“There are lots of activities and dog sports out there and it’s no secret that dogs often have a little too much energy,” says Meghan Wolfgram of Swift Paws. “Lure coursing is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to tire your pup out both mentally and physically.”

Along with being able to watch a few demonstrations of the sport, pet parents will be invited to allow their pups to try out the course for themselves for a small fee, so that they have the opportunity to decide if their pets could benefit from the exercise and excitement of lure coursing.

“Lure coursing is always a fun and entertaining addition to the Expos,” says Ethan Barnett, Vice President of Community Partnerships for Amazing Pet Expos. “No matter the dog sport, we’re always happy to watch the pets of our attendees having fun and showing us how to embrace new things. Lure coursing is a great way to exercise your pet no matter their age, breed, or disability.”

The Capitol Pet Expo will also feature meet-and-greet opportunities with Shorty Rossi, of Pit Boss fame. Along with lure coursing, there will be more than 75 exhibitors, live entertainment and demonstrations, and a mega-adoption area with more than 150 rescue pets available for adoption. Low-cost immunizations, discounted microchipping, and free nail trims will also be available for all the furry friends who need them.

Admission to the 2015 Capitol Pet Expo is free, courtesy of Banfield Pet Hospital. This indoor and air-conditioned event is expected to attract up to 10,000 attendees along with their furry, feathered and reptilian pals who are looking to enjoy a new and one-of-a-kind experience where all pets can enjoy a fun day out with their pet parent(s). All well-behaved pets are welcome, as long as they’re on a fixed lead (or in a carrier) and have proof of age-appropriate rabies vaccines.
